Mamoru Hosoda’s Newest Work Scarlet Announces Release Date! | Anime News

Animation director Mamoru Hosoda’s latest work Scarlet is set to be released in Japan on November 21st 2025. Set in the “Land of the Dead” it tells the story of princess Scarlet’s endless journey for revenge. Together with the announcement, an impactful teaser visual showing Scarlet’s pure white dress stained with blood as well as a special video showing clips of the film’s setting, the Land of the Dead and Scarlet burning with a desire for revenge were unveiled.

Scarlet is the latest film to be released, four years after the previous work Belle and there was a production press conference held for it last year on December 23rd. The super teaser visual which shows a woman with a sword at her waist and a powerful gaze staring off at a distant light under a gloomy sky raises expectations as it feels quite different from Studio Chizu and Mamoru Hosoda’s previous works up until now.

Although not all the details of the film have been revealed, the story details were made public along with the announcement of the release date. The film’s protagonist Scarlet is the princess, whose father the king was murdered. However, after failing to exact her revenge, Scarlet wakes up in the Land of the Dead. The Land of the Dead overflows with madness and if Scarlet cannot exact revenge against her enemy and reach the “unfinished place” she will turn into nothingness and disappear. Can Scarlet exact her revenge without turning into nothingness? Thus Scarlet’s endless journey for revenge begins…and so the story unfolds.
